Ged Bell's Family Butchers - upper crust when it comes to making pies

A good pie is a thing of beauty, and nestled among the food court at York Racecourse sits a much hailed addition to the food-to-go concept 2016 - Ged Bell’s Pies.

Established in 1980 in Dringhouses, just a mile and half from the racecourse, Ged Bell had a vision to build a small family business that would set him, and his young family on a steady path for the future. Ged quickly developed a local reputation for quality meats and award winning pies, earning him the nickname ‘the Pie Man of York’.

Now, the pie is enjoying a remarkable renaissance thanks to its reinvention as the ultimate trendy snack. New for the 2016 season, pies available at York Races include; Yorkshire Free Range Pork Pies, Aberdeen Angus Mince Beef & Onion Pie, Aberdeen Angus Steak Pie, Yorkshire Free Range Chicken & Vegetable, or even Curried Vegetable as well as a gluten free offer. With the option to add mushy peas, beef gravy or mint sauce.

Three generations play their part in this much loved family butchers; the late Ged Bell’s son, Lee runs the business with the support of Ged’s wife Lynn, his sister Nicola and the younger members of the family. The shop is a way of life for this second generation of Bell’s, and if asked what he wants to be when he’s older, Lee’s eldest son is sure he will be a butcher. He loves helping cut out the pastry and sampling the pork pies.

The meat which fills Ged’s traditional pork pie is also a family affair sourced from one of Yorkshire’s finest free range pig breeder Anna’s Happy Trotters based in Howden, East Yorkshire.

If you are visiting us for our October Finale (Fri 7 and Sat 8 October), make sure you head down to the Knavesmire Courtyard or look out for the pork pie sellers walking around the course.
