Assistant Grounds Manager

Deputy Safety Officer
York Racecourse seeks to appoint a Deputy Safety Officer (DSO) for our racedays during the 2025 season and beyond. This is a seasonal part time role to support the preparation and the delivery of our annual racing calendar (17 racedays) between May and October.
The role will involve conducting risk assessments, maintaining our Raceday Operations Manual, managing the control room, dealing with incidents and ensuring that suitable records are maintained. There will be further requirements to be involved in training sessions, table top exercises, briefings, post event reviews and Safety Advisory Group meetings etc.
The DSO will report to the Head of Operations who also holds the position of Ground Safety Officer. This is a key role in the Raceday Safety Management Team. The Head of Operations will look to the DSO to provide leadership and to support the pro-active improvement in our safety management systems and performance. The DSO will have the full authority to take decisions to ensure the safety of people attending or working at the event.
The DSO must be able to demonstrate their occupational competency as defined by the 6th Edition of the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds. A key requirement will be the ability to quickly form positive relationships with senior members of the Racecourse Team, and our partners including the stewarding contractor, police and medics etc. Essential to this are excellent written and verbal communication skills. Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of addressing current safety at sports grounds and crowd management issues. Experience of horse racing events is desirable but not essential.
Although advertised as a part time role, we would also welcome applications from businesses and individuals wishing to provide the service as a contractor.
